The $101 million facility….. is a deeply moving reminder of the sheer power of design to make the world a better place.”

Christopher Hume, Toronto Star

“After working in the new building, I could see how the beauty of the design conveyed a kind of respect for the people inside. it really did change how we – children and families and staff – feel in the building.”

Louise Kinross, Editor of Bloom, Communications and Public Affairs

On a beautiful ravine-edge site bridging between urban and natural worlds, the five-storey children’s rehabilitation and teaching hospital was inspired by the vision to make a “remarkable place” of respect, hope and possibility.

Holland Bloorview houses 75 twenty-four care beds, extensive clinic and therapy programs, research and technology labs, a family resource centre and school, communal and recreation spaces open to the public indoors and out, and accommodation for out-of-town families. A special program of site-specific art and interactive installations creates landmarks throughout the building and site, encouraging exploration and inspiring wonder and delight. See Art Consulting page.

In collaboration with Montgomery Sisam Architects and Stantec Architecture in Joint Venture, Carlyle Design Associates provided project services starting in 2000 with facilitation of a predesign and visioning process and continuing through interior, furnishings and signage planning and design to development of the integrated art program.

Since opening in 2006, Carlyle Design has provided design services for a renovation of the Day Program space and consulting during the development of the interactive ScreenPlay installation in Clinic waiting.

In 2020, Carlyle Design Associates worked closely with Hanson Jung Architects to redesign space for a renovation to accommodate a state-of-the-art research MRI. See Holland Bloorview Research MRI project page.
